Face Serum vs. Face Oil: What Are The Differences?

I often get asked about the difference between face oils and face serums; they boast unique benefits and promise radiant, healthy skin. But what are they, and what sets them apart? And how do you know which one is right for your skincare routine? Let’s delve into the differences between face serums and face oils.

Face Serum - What is it?

A face serum is a lightweight, highly concentrated skincare product formulated with potent active ingredients to target specific skin concerns, such as hydration, brightening, or anti-ageing.

Face Serum - how to use it?

Apply a few drops of serum to cleansed skin, gently patting it in until fully absorbed. Serums are typically applied after cleansing and toning but before moisturising, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin for maximum efficacy.

Kate Sommervilles HydraKate™ Recharging Serum £67

This product I love, it has hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid for instant and long-lasting hydration. It combats dullness, dryness, and fine lines, delivering visibly plumped, radiant skin.

Face Oil - What is it?

Facial oils are full of vitamins, minerals, lipids, and omegas, which will help strengthen your skin barrier, bring radiance, and instant comfort, and improve skin elasticity.

Facial oils are full of emollients; they won’t block your moisturiser, and equally, they will penetrate through your moisturiser.

Face Oil - How to use it?

Layering skincare can be confusing and the order of facial oils keeps coming up. It can go under and over your moisturiser. I love mixing a few drops in with my moisturiser in the morning, applying it over my retinoids at night, or even using it to massage with to give a DIY facial massage.

Oskia Skincare Restoration Oil £81

This is my obsession during the colder months; it is a must-have for all skin types as it rejuvenates the skin with an exquisite blend of botanicals. It works to replenish and revitalise, enhance elasticity, and leave your complexion radiant.

Let’s explore how they are different.

While face serums and face oils both offer skincare benefits, they differ in formulation and purpose. Serums target specific concerns with potent active ingredients and lightweight textures, while oils provide intense hydration and nourishment, creating a protective barrier on the skin's surface. The choice between a serum and an oil depends on individual skin needs and preferences, as well as the desired skincare outcomes.
