The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser – An Expert Review

The Ordinary appears to be launching a lot of products in 2023 and I for one am here for it.

I have always believed that great skin can be achieved whatever your budget, which is something The Ordinary stands for too. It’s just about knowing what to buy without wasting time and money at the expense of your skin and your wallet. For many years The Ordinary has just one product for cleansing, but now they have three, and their latest launch is the Glycolipid Cream Cleanser.

What is a glycolipid?

Before I dive into the cleanser review, let’s first recap on its key ingredient. Glycolipids are an ingredient used in the beauty industry to effectively cleanse the skin whilst respecting the skin barrier. They are extremely gentle on the skin and work to soften and smooth. The ‘glyco’ part of the name relates to the fact they’re typically sugar-based, while the ‘lipid’ part signifies that it is a type of fat. Glycolipids are essentially sugar-based fat molecules that have been linked together to give a gentle skin-compatible cleansing action on the skin.

What is The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser?

The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser has a non-foaming, water-based, gel-cream texture that effortlessly glides over the skin. It feels as light and as cool as a gel but with the comforting, soothing feeling of a cream. After use, skin feels refreshed, hydrated, soft and comfortable.

As I’ve already mentioned, the key ingredient is glycolipids, and it’s alcohol, oil, gluten and fragrance-free. It is also suitable for vegans.

If you prefer foaming cleansers, this won’t be for you, and I would recommend The Ordinary Glucoside Foaming Cleanser instead.

Which skin types will love The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser?

This cleanser has been designed for all skin types, but if you have oily skin or combination skin then you’ll really love it, as it cleanses effectively without stripping, for skin that feels fresh and smooth.

It’s also super gentle, so if you have sensitive skin and struggle to find a good cleanser that deep cleanses but doesn’t irritate, you’ll be a fan of this too. I initially thought it was quite a big claim for the brand to say it’s suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, so I put this through the ultimate test and tested it on rosacea skin. This skin type is notoriously picky but The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser passed the test and left the skin feeling refreshed, soft and calm.

Who shouldn’t use The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser?

If you have dry skin, you will prefer the Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, as this one focuses on hydrating and nourishing your complexion. It’s a brilliant product that instantly comforts the skin for under £15 – I highly rate this.

How to use The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser

The Ordinary recommends you apply their Glycolipid Cream Cleanser to dry skin, massage to remove makeup including mascara and eyeliner, and then rinse with warm water. My recommendation is to use this as your second cleanse in the evening as part of your double cleansing routine, and then again in the morning to start your day. Another top tip is to rinse well to remove the cleanser with water, rather than using a cloth, to ensure it’s entirely removed. If there are traces left behind then the skin will feel tight and dry.

Will The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser remove eye makeup?

The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser can be used over the eyes with no stinging. It’s oil-free, so I was intrigued at how effectively it would remove eye makeup, as you tend to need oil to cut through mascara with ease. If you are wearing light makeup, then The Ordinary Glycolipid Cream Cleanser will remove it effectively. However, if you’re trying to remove anything more, you’ll need to really focus on the eyes or potentially even use a separate cleanser in this area. I found myself rubbing at my eyes a lot more during removal than I would if I were cleansing with an oil or balm in order to melt the mascara away completely.
