The Benefits of LED Light Therapy for Your Skin
LED light therapy has become a must-have beauty device in many skincare routines, often deemed as a game changer. But are they truly worth the investment? As a skincare expert with years of professional experience using LED devices, I often hear questions like: "Do LED devices really work?", “what results can I expect to achieve?”, "do the results plateau over time", "will they make melasma worse?", and “are they good for rosacea?”
In this blog, I’ll address these common concerns and help you decide if LED light therapy is right for your skincare routine.
What is LED Light Therapy?
I like to think of them as “light boosting energy” as LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, which uses specific wavelengths of light to trigger cellular responses in the skin. Using multi-beneficial light energy, these non-invasive devices activate cellular pathways in your skin, to energize and stimulate your skin’s natural healing and repair processes. Though the benefits of LED light therapy aren't immediate, with regular use, you'll see long-term improvements in skin health.
What skin conditions can LED Light Therapy tackle?
LED light therapy can be a game changer with its wide range of benefits. It works by energizing your skin cells, activating the skin's natural repair and regeneration processes. These natural responses to LED light therapy can effectively treat various conditions, including:
Acne
Hyperpigmentation
Redness and inflammation (e.g. rosacea, psoriasis)
What are the skin benefits and results I can achieve with an LED Mask?
Your LED results depend largely on the device you purchase.
LED light therapy Skin Benefits:
Stimulates Collagen Production: Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improves skin firmness as pores are reduced.
Reduces Inflammation: Depending on the wavelength and LED colour, LED light can tackle or calm conditions like rosacea and psoriasis.
Aids Wound Healing: Helps skin recover more quickly from damage caused by environmental factors or stress.
Fights Acne: Targets bacteria that contribute to breakouts.
Improves Skin Tone: Depending on the type of hyperpigmentation, LED light can help even out skin tone and reduce pigmentation issues.
Boosts Skin Vitality: Stimulates blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin for a healthy, glowing complexion.

What are the LED different colours and their benefits?
The colour of the LED is important when choosing your LED device as it impacts the results you want to achieve. Due to the different reactions that each wavelength can activat, each colour offers different results and works at different levels of the skin. Often created by brands to combine all lights to have an overall skin health benefit.
Red Light: Penetrates deep into the skin to stimulate collagen and reduce wrinkles.
Blue Light: Targets acne-causing bacteria and reduces skin imperfections.
Near-Infrared (NIR): Reaches deeper skin layers to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and soothe sensitive skin.
Deep Near-Infrared (DNI): Not widely available but effective for collagen stimulation and wrinkle reduction.
Green Light: Brightens the complexion and evens skin tone.
Orange Light: Revitalizes and improves skin texture.
Yellow Light: Reduces redness and calms the skin.
Purple Light: Helps with hyperpigmentation.
Cyan Light: Calms and de-stresses the skin.
How long should you use the LED device?
All clinical I have studies have been done for 10mins and used 5 days out of 7 days, consistency is key and I would suggest taking photos to track your progress
How quickly will I see results?
Results typically appear between 4 to 16 weeks, depending on the device and your skin condition. Factors like the quality of the LED device, light intensity, and bulb distribution will affect the speed and effectiveness of results.
Will the results plateau over time?
Like skincare and many devices depending on what you are trying to achieve there is always a degree of things plateau. This depends on what you are trying to achieve with your LED device.
Can I use skincare underneath my LED device?
You can apply skincare before or after using LED light therapy, but avoid products that react with light, such as Vitamin C, exfoliating acids, and retinol. Stick to lightweight and water-based serums like hyaluronic acid or peptides to maximize the benefits, as we don't want anything to block the wavelengths from working and reaching the skin.
Who shouldn't use LED Light therapy?
LED devices may not be suitable for everyone. Avoid LED light therapy if you:
Have photosensitive disorders or are on medications that cause photosensitivity.
Experience light-induced headaches or have epilepsy.
Have genetic eye conditions.
Treating melasma
If in doubt please check with your doctor or consultant.
